Life on the moon

Here are a few photos from a recent field expedition to the Brooks Range and the North Slope of Alaska. This shot was taken by Ken Tape using a Near Infra-Red camera.

Snow sampling near Toolik Field Station.

Stream sampling on the Middle Fork of the Koyukuk River, near Wiseman.

I would like to take this opportunity to be the second official comment! Is it weird that I like the stream sampling picture more than the moon/snow sampling picture? The stream picture is really amazing and conveys the desolation of AK winters/life much better than the moon/red one. Maybe because there are two people in the moon/red one and only one in the stream photo. Or perhaps it's because the near IR hue really makes it seem otherworldy and therefore the viewer is unable to relate to the experience or infer the feelings of the subjects.
