Revisiting McCarthy, August 2008

Last August, my parents came to visit for a 5-day whirlwind trip around the state of Alaska. In 5 days, we managed to drive to and from McCarthy, down the incredibly haggard McCarthy Rd. But the city dwellers hung tough, and the Subaru survived without replacing one tire, and we had a great time.

First stop...a beautiful view of the Wrangells from our quaint little lodge.

Did I mention that our quaint little lodge was the Copper River Valley Princess?

Speaking of Copper River, Chrissy and I decided to show my Mom & Dad what Chitina was all about. Unfortunately, the dipnetting was quiet.
To enter the village of McCarthy, you have to cross this raging river on a small, but sturdy, foot bridge.

After an amazingly long drive down the McCarthy Rd, we hunkered down for the night at Ma Johnson's Roadhouse.

The next day, we took the shuttle out to the Kennicott mines.

Time to cross the bridge again...

One final moose sighting, to the pleasure of my dad.
