Spring Break in Cordova

We just got back from a short trip to Cordova, a small fishing village of about 25oo year-round residents in southeast Alaska. Cordova is unique (relative to say Homer or Seward or Valdez) because it is not connected to the state road system (yet). In fact, every car in Cordova has a bumper sticker that exclaims "NO ROAD", reflecting the strong resistence of locals to the state government's desire to build a road. The cruiselines don't stop in Cordova either. Most of the folks we met were fairly certain that there was no place in the world they would rather live.

This is the view from Katey's place, where we stayed for two night, overlooking downtown Cordova and the Chugach Mountains.

Here is the small boat harbor. The weather was seriously like this for 5 days straight.

We tried to drive the Copper River Highway out to the Million Dollar Bridge and some apparently intense glacier viewing, but ran into some pretty amazing snow drifts and ice that the 2WD rental was not equipped to deal with.

A US Forest Service Cabin at McKinley Lake, where we spent two days hanging out.
